Mobile Phones

Mobile phones calls cost more than a call made from a fixed line phone . The standard rates usually start at about 0.60 cents/per minute. On a mobile phone, you may be charged a flag call fee to access the phone system and then a per minute or per second rate for the call.

For the younger user of mobile phones, a pre-paid mobile phone may be the best option. You have the convenience of a mobile phone but not a huge bill at the end of the month. It also means there is no long term contract that you are locked into.

Shopping for a mobile phone can be daunting!

When you are shopping around for a phone, be sure to look for a phone that will suit your needs. What features do you want/need? Do you need a phone that will take photos? Or is it just a basic phone you are after?

What you will use your phone for, and how often you will use it, will determine what type of mobile phone will best suit you.

A pre-paid mobile phone will allow you to buy 'credit' for your phone. You can use the 'credit' you have purchased to make phone calls up to a certain amount of money. Pre-paid is an excellent way to use your mobile and stay within your budget. Once you've used up your 'credit', you will not be able to use your phone again until you've 'topped' it up.

Mobile Phone Plans

There are plenty of ads offering $0 for a phone. If you wish to take up one of these options, make sure to read the small print.

The cost of the phone is usually included in the contract you are asked to sign. If there is anything you do not understand, do not be afraid to ask. It is better to ask before the contract is signed than being stuck with a contract that is not what you were expecting.

If you decide to join a mobile phone plan, your provider must show you the minimum final cost over the total period of your contract before you sign up. You may have a one-off flat fee at the beginning of your contract.

The mobile compieany must also tell you if there is a fee for cancelling your contract before it has finished. Some companies charge you what the balance of your contract is while others may have no penalts.

Remember to ask the following questions before signing any mobile phone contract:

· How much will I have to pay per month?
· How long is the contract for?
· Are there any penalties if I want to end the contract early?
· How much will my calls cost?
· Are there any other costs
