Buying a Car - What to do before you sign the contract?
What should you tell the car sales people? If all your checks and the inspection report were satisfactory you can talk with the motor dealer and:
Ask for a 'REVS' certificate
Negotiate a price
Discuss / negotiate for accessories
Discuss warranties. Read the warranty contract especially the terms and conditions
Read the contract carefully before signing, once you sign the contract the car is yours
If you decide to go ahead with the purchase make sure you get a:
· Copy of the contract
· Revs certificate
· Roadworthy certificate
· Warranty contract
Note: make sure you get the car insured before driving it. Remember if in doubt don't buy it, there is always another bargain tomorrow.
If you live you near a regional centre
If you live near a regional centre you should take notes of the:
Number of kilometres the vehicle has travelled
The registration, engine & chassis numbers
The price
Any accessories fitted to the vehicle
Warranty details
The name and address of the last owner
Ask if they will deliver the vehicle for an independent inspection
Arrange an independent inspection, your decision to continue with the purchase should be based upon this report
Keep looking if the report is unsatisfactory
Download the ICAN Buying a Car Check List (Tool Box).
If you live in a remote community
If you live in a remote community and you find a car you like you should arrange for an independent inspection. Your decision to proceed should be based upon the inspection report.
Getting an independent check is strongly recommended. You can contact your state or territory automobile association.
